Raising Awareness * How Can Your Child Help Nature?

Now more than ever, it’s easy to forget the delicate beauty of a butterfly’s dance; but if you have ever experienced any of nature’s live performances, whether as an adult or as a child, then you’re most likely aware that there can be no substitute for such simple pleasures in life.

The world of nature is an exciting place that is waiting to awe your children with colorful adventures and amazing new discoveries. Better yet, kids don’t have to go far away from home or empty their piggybanks to gain entrance to this magical realm. For the time being, nature is easily accessible and can be explored in your backyard, garden, or any public park or national reserve.

The more difficult part of the equation is closing the gap that has grown between children and nature. You as parents can be part of the solution. With your help, children can begin to rediscover the wonders of the natural world. Encourage outdoor exploration and direct your kids to resources that can help them understand more about what they see. Join your children in feeding birds, planting shrub and seeds, or locating a place outside that is special to them - these are the kinds of activities that forge a life-long bond with nature.

Daily Behaviors
  • Take your child on a walk in the garden, and encourage them to observe nature (birds, ants, small animals, bird calls, the wind blowing through the trees... etc.).
  • Don’t throw out colored paints (water or oil) in the garden because these paints are poisonous to soil, plants, and animals.
  • Write on both sides of paper, because paper comes from trees; when we save paper, we save trees.
  • Encourage your child to talk with her/his friend about nature and how we can save it.

In the Backyard
  • Help your child plant medicinal shrubs and seeds.
  • Watch ants making anthills.
  • Encourage her/him to feed birds by putting seeds and dry bread in some proper containers (you can use empty cans) and hang them on trees.
  • Help her/him to make a birdhouse from simple material.
  • Collect tree leaves and bury them in a hole around trees.

During Trips

When you go out into nature, encourage your child to:

  • Keep the place clean (don’t throw garbage on the ground).
  • Enjoy live flowers without collecting them.
  • Protect trees and prevent children from engraving their names on the trees’ trunks or digging the soil out from around the trees and exposing roots.
  • Watch birds and listen to their songs. Teach them not to harm birds by shooting them with stones or climbing trees to remove small birds from their nests.
