About RSCN * People's Perspectives

“The inventiveness of RSCN’s staff in creating a partnership with the local community to protect a precious natural habitat was an inspiration to us. I was genuinely proud that the World Bank is associated with such a venture, and I think of it as a model for successful nature conservation efforts elsewhere.”

Mr. James Wolfenson – World Bank President

“USAID is proud of its long and productive partnership with the RSCN. At its most basic level, development is about giving people the opportunity to achieve their full potential. For this reason, we admire RSCNs core goal of “helping nature…helping people.” RSCN serves as a model for other developing countries by innovatively linking nature conservation and protection with economic development.”

USAID Director, Jordan

“Since 1998, the German Hanns Seidel Foundation together with the Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature has funded seminars conferences, focusing on general environmental protection issues and specifically on reserve management. These projects can be seen as a first step towards implementing activities that are tailor-made for the environmental training needs of the region while at the same time taking into account the particular needs of each individual country.”

Mr. Helmut Hornig Regional Director of Hanns Seidel Foundation, Jordan

“The inventiveness of RSCN is that it does not simply deal with the preservation of ecological diversity, but also with the promotion of sustainable and people-centered development. Japan supports such approaches and is glad to have been a partner of RSCN.”

Mr. Shintaro Sasaki – Ambassador of Japan, Jordan

“The preservation of the unique habitats and beauty of Jordan in national reserves and parks would not have been possible had it not been for the dedicated and highly professional work carried out by RSCN, which has managed to combine a clear vision with an admirable capacity to get things done. RSCN’s performance as a partner and collaborator in projects related to national reserves and eco-tourism has been superb.”

Dr. Ove Bjereaard, UNDP Resident Representative, Jordan

“The British Government greatly values its long-standing co-operation with the RSCN; the protection of Jordan’s unique natural environment is a matter of global importance. Local support for this is vital. The staff of RSCN has managed to convince Jordanians that it is in their interests and that the conservation of areas as diverse as Wadi Rum, the Azraq Wetland and Wadi Mujib contributes to the sustainable development of the country. We look forward to developing our relationship with the RSCN in the years to come.”

Mr. Christopher Prentice, British Ambassador, Jordan

“I admire the beauty of nature in Jordan and I am proud that the Government of Switzerland is supporting RSCN in preserving it.”

Dr. Adrian Gnagi, Director of SDC Office, Jordan

“The Royal Netherlands Embassy was pleased to make a financial donation to RSCN’s Azraq Killifish Stocking Program. The aim is to save the Azraq Killifish (Aphanius Sirhani) from extinction. To this end, RSCN built two concrete pools and developed a stocking program... The Royal Netherlands Embassy commends RSCN for its crucial role in helping Jordan’s precious natural environment.”

Dr. Marjanne de Kwaasteniet – Ambassador of the Netherlands, Jordan

“GTZ shares RSCN’s mission to protect, manage and promote the sustainable use of natural resources in Jordan. Therefore, we did not hesitate to support our competent partner in upgrading and widening the market of its Al Reem magazine to promote wider awareness of conservation among individuals and institutions in Jordan and in the region.”

Dr. Heinz-Michael Hauser – Director, GTZ Middle East

“Technical cooperation with RSCN started through JOCV program, where JICA Jordan Office dispatched volunteers in different fields like photography, design and ecological research. RSCN is one of the distinguished institutions in Jordan where the JOCV program was remarkably successful. The cooperation with RSCN has been developed to another type of cooperation, where JICA conducted a workshop on Environmental Legislation and Enforcement (1999 – 2001).”

Mr. Mitsuo Inagaki, Res. Representative of JICA

“I joined the RSCN to be an effective member in the society that promotes the concept of nature conservation and spreads the awareness of the importance of nature in our lives and how can we improve our outlook towards protecting it. Another reason is that through the RSCN we'll have the chance to see and discover our wildlife and appreciate it.”

Hala Ghattas, individual RSCN member from 2004

“As an experienced tour operator, I have always had a passion for natural wildlife and exotic animal reserves. My personal interest was further motivated by Jordan’s natural diversity of different and spectacular species. Thanks to RSCN and Wild Jordan, of which I have been a dedicated member with since 1998, I have been able to effectively put into practice my enthusiasm for environmental protection and public awareness.”

Mohammed Najeeb, individual RSCN member since 1998

“I didn’t know that Jordan has so many marvelous places until I joined The Royal Society for the Conservation on Nature. I had the chance to visit and explore a lot of beautiful places in Jordan because of the trips organized by the RSCN for its members.”

Osama Qatan, long-life RSCN member since 1980

“I worked with the RSCN as an engineering student with their bird behavior and migration studies, by implementing with my colleagues a computer based system to assist researchers in bird identification by their songs. Being in contact with the society and their activities was on one hand very environmentally educational. The RSCN looks after a wide number of nature reserves and engages in world-class research and environmental studies to maintain environmental systems, protect endangered animals, and to perform behavioral studies on animals. It was also a real pleasure meeting the very friendly staff and members, and seeing such amazing beauty in Jordan’s nature reserves. Al-Mujib and Dana reserves become a part of a person definition of Jordan; to have experienced Jordan you must have been to those places!”

Samir Rawashdeh, student RSCN member since 2006
